IHRSA Conference 17

This month I attended (IHRSA) Conference in the Clayton hotel where I had the opportunity meet and see many of the leading operators in the fitness world. The keynote speakers and panels discussed the latest trends and innovations as well as promoting the importance of staying active to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

While we hope to introduce some of these ideas towards the end of this year and in to 2020 we have been moving in the right direction. Group fitness class will continue to grow in 2020 with a demand in shorter 30 minute classes. We have just added Les Mills Grit classes in September and have been slowly adding 30 minute HIIT spin into the timetable. Expect to see more of these in our first timetable in the New Year.

Coffee machine

We have invested in a new Nespresso machine for our reception area. There a number of strengths and flavours to choose from while there is also a hot water function for herbal or black tea. We have also reduced the price with a coffee just €2 while a cup of tea is €1.00. These will also be added to the rewards scheme from November.

Rewards

Have you checked out our new rewards items? You can now redeem sports bags, cotton glute bands, earbud earphones, resistance bands and cotton towels. You can claim these and many more rewards via our mobile app, Iconic Health Clubs.

Save the date

Come join us on December 14th for our annual members Christmas Party. We will be hosting the event in The Iveagh Garden Hotel on Dawson Street. Feel free to bring a friend with you to introduce to the team. Ask the team at reception for further details.

Congratulations to our member Joy Tracy.

In April this year, Joy was approached by a friend who suggested that she take part in a charity cycle in aid of Little Blue Heroes, on 1st August from Dublin to Cork, with an overnight in Templemore.  Joy had some reservation about agreeing but she felt that she needed a challenge, so she signed up.   To help her prepare Joy increased her training at the Dartry Health Club to include more spin classes, with a mix of Body Pump, core strength, Pilates and yoga.

As the date got nearer, Joy’s friend became concerned that she was not doing any road training, but Joy assured him that her training at the gym was sufficient, and so she completed the cycle on her trusted hybrid, drawing attention from the other cyclists, who were convinced that there was a battery on her bike.

“I can say, without reservation, that thanks is due to the trainers at the gym for their encouragement and motivation to my training, in helping me to achieve my goal”, said Joy

Congratulations Joy!  We’re all very proud of you and your fantastic achievement.

On behalf of the team at The Dartry Health Club, I’d like to welcome all our members back after the summer.  We’ve been very busy behind the scenes getting ready for your return and we are really excited about seeing you all back at the club.

Club maintenance

Throughout the summer we carried out a number of upgrades and essential works to the club.
The showers areas in both changing rooms have had new ceiling tiles fitted with new LED lights being fitted. The shampoo dispensers and shelves in the male changing room have been replaced also.

We always strive to have the cleanest and best facilities possible for our members. Often we have to put investment into areas that might not be visible at first glance to our members but which are hugely valuable to our member experience.  One such example of this was in August when invested €8k on 3 tonnes of sand to pool filtration s

Price changes

Over the last two years the business has invested over €750,000 in upgrading the club to bring it to it’s full premium potential.  Having been with the club myself for over 11 years I am so thrilled to see the club excelling in terms of the value we offer and the experience for our members. As of September the fee for new members has been increased, inline with our sister club at €80 per month. Current members will not be effected by this price increase and can still avail of their current rate.  This is a very positive step for the club and it’s future and I am so proud to be involved in it’s continued success.

National Quality Standard

In August we completed our Annual Audit for the National Quality Standard for health clubs. This rigorous audit ensures we consistently adhere to only the highest standard in health club management, safety, hygiene and customer service. We are confident that once again this year we will achieve the Outstanding award for our three clubs.

Class timetable

Our fitness manager Alex has just completed our new class timetable which is due to start from September 16th. We received some valuable feedback from our member surveys and I’m delighted to announce that we will be launching Les Mills Grit from this September. These HIIT classes are broken into three categories which are Grit Strength, Grit Athletic and Grit Cardio. Our trainers have been studying GRIT for the last few months and can’t wait to introduce it to your workout. Make sure to book in for these classes through our mobile app, Iconic Health Clubs which is available on Android and IOS. In the meantime here’s a quick glimpse at our new class GRIT and why we believe it is the best HIIT class in the world.

National Fitness Day 2019

On September 26th we will be running eight additional classes as part of National Fitness Day 2019. The initiative is to encourage more people, to get more active, more often. These classes will be open to both members and guests and bookings can be made at reception from September 23rd.  So grab a friend and colleague and bring them down on National Fitness Day.

Staff Changes

I would like to welcome two new staff membersto the team. We have a fourth Dave who is joining the fitness team. Dave Ryan has been working in the industry for a few years now but has wanted to join the team at Iconic Health clubs for some time now and we are delighted to have him on board.

We would also like to welcome Pedro Candido from Sao Paolo to our club care team.

Finally, would also like to congratulate our trainer Suzanne Cantrell who is on maternity leave. She gave birth to her daughter Aoibheann earlier this month and both mum and baby are doing great.

Club maintenance

Throughout March and April we have continued to improve the quality of our facilities. Our new BMS system has been installed and has proved to be a huge success so far particularly for the temperature in the changing room and by poolside. Over the past few weeks we have made a number of fixes and upgrade in the club.

We have made also a number of repairs to our gym equipment including to the treadmills, leg press, zero gravity runner, watt bike and the assault bike.

Please note that tomorrow, Good Friday, that our car park will be closed from 6am – 4pm to allow us to carry out some maintenance works.  On street parking will still be available, however as always we ask that you respect our neighbours and take care not to cause any obstruction to their access routes.

New equipment

Have you tried our new Nautilus Glute Drive machine? This glute machine helps build power through a strong hip bridge motion, to improve hip and core stability, and ultimately create stronger and toned glutes. Inspired by the increasing trend of glute exercises seen in various and dangerous executions in other gyms today, the Nautilus Glute Drive piece safely and smartly isolates your glutes. These benefits are universally desirable, important for a wide variety of sports and exercises, and are arguably the most important muscles for total athleticism. The Glute Drive gives you the full benefits of the hip thrust exercise, simply, safely, and with good form. The machine is designed to promote good biomechanics and balanced weight curve. A comfortable padded belt secures the user to the back pad which supports the full length of the spine for added safety. You can load up to four plates on each side, which gives the machine a max weight load of 360 lbs.

Check out the video below from our instructor Jess on how to use the Nautilus Glute Drive machine.

If you would like any further instruction or if you have set yourself any summer goals why not book in with one of our personal trainers for a programme review or a PT session. A full list of our personal trainers and their profiles can be found on our website or on the PT board which is beside the stretching area.

Summer timetable

Myself and Alex will be working on the Summer timetable over the week. We have already received quite a few suggestions since the new year and if you have any please forward them to Alex’s email; fitness@thedartryhealthclub.ie.

We had another wildly successful year at the latest industry gold standard Nutramino National Health & Fitness awards scooping first prize in four categories and winning all the accolades for Gym Team of the Year.

Firstly, I’d like to say a huge congratulations to our teams after their success at the National Health and Fitness awards last week.  We were thrilled to win 4 National Awards including Gym Team of the Year and Customer Service Provider of the Year. None of this would have been possible without the great team we have working with us and of course our members support. Also, I’d like to congratulate Jess our trainer for making the finals for Fitness Instructor of the Year.

The group dominated the Gym Team of The Year, which it also won last year, with Iconic taking all three awards in this category - Dartry Health Club in south Dublin came first, 1escape was awarded silver and Icon took bronze.

Club investments and maintenance

In February we continued the improvements to the reception area with new seating and signage.  We are thrilled with the way it has turned out and thank you all for the terrific feedback.

Lounge area in The Dartry Health Club Gym dublin

I’m sure our new Costa Coffee machine will be a great addition to the club. Treat yourself to a Cappuccino or an Americano and grab a seat in our lounge area, relax and enjoy!  Payment for your coffee can be made at reception.

Our BMS that controls our heating is due to be fully operational by the end of March. The coils which were ordered at the end of January are due to be delivered on Tuesday 19th and the engineers will start working on it on the same day.

Canali machines update.

We are delighted to be able to update you about our machine weights.  We have finally had confirmation that the Canali machines will be collected next Wednesday 20th March to make way for replacement equipment.  I am excited to announce that I have ordered lots of new machine weights for the gym floor that will arrive in May. This will mean that every single machine will have been replaced with a brand new model by the worlds leading fitness equipment provider Freemotion.  I have taken on board all your recent feedback about the machines and I am confident that you are going to love the new equipment.  In the interim we have organised a loan of a leg press, leg curl, chest fly and a rear delt machine from our fitness suppliers and they will be arriving on Thursday.

Class booking changes

As always, we ask that you respect the code of conduct for classes and the use of the app. We have increased the cancellation period from 30 minutes to 2 hours. This should mean that people on the waiting lists will not be added to the class 30 minutes before it commences and will give them enough time to attend the class or call reception to cancel if the cutoff time has passed.

The rules regarding bookings and classes are in place to ensure that all members can attend the classes of their choice. Current statistics show that class attendance is on average at 75% which means there is plenty of space for everybody but if the rules are not respected then members may lose out.

Staff changes
Our new trainer Dave Cunningham joined our fitness team at the start of February. Dave has a huge wealth of experience in the fitness industry having first started as an instructor 15 years ago. He is also a level 2 swim instructor and has already slotted in for the Wednesday group lessons. We are thrilled to welcome Dave to our team and I am confident that he’ll be in big demand.

As always, I am available for any questions you have regarding your membership and I look forward to seeing you soon.

New equipment

We have pledged a further €50,000 investment for new cardio equipment which will be delivered to us over the next eight weeks. Arriving first will be new cross trainers followed by eight new treadmills which we expect to have at the start of December. We are really excited with these new additions.  Check out the video below to get an idea of what to expect.

New Cross Trainers

We are also getting some new cross trainers that are the most natural feeling striding motion machine on the market. They will also have an interactive console with some great programmes.

We have also ordered a selection of new free weights for the strength floor. The lead time for these is a little bit longer, but we should have them early in the New Year.

Club refurbishments

Since the acquiring the club in 2016, Iconic Health Clubs has continuously invested in club improvements, including the car park, a new studio and the Strength Training Suite. Their next focus is refurbishing our reception and ground floor corridors in order to create and more luxurious and enjoyable social space for our members and guests. The builders that we have contracted to carry out these works have advised us that for health and safety reasons they will need us to close the club for a period of 3 days whilst they undertake the project.  This will result in the club closing from Sunday December 16th – Tuesday 18th (traditonally our quietest usage dates) and we will reopen on Wednesday 19th December.  We are extremely excited about this and can’t wait to see the finished article.

Kids swimming programme

Our swim programme has gone from strength to strength since it’s introduction two years ago.  We are delighted that we have progressed so many of our junior members through to level 8.  In order to progress the course even further we will be launching our Junior Lifeguard course soon. This will include a combination of both class room and pool based activities. If you would like further details please contact Dave at swimming@thedartryhealthclub.ie and register your interest.

Our kids swim programme starts this week with most all of the spots are take. We hope to add an additional on Friday afternoons later in September. Dave has taken over as our Swim Coordinator with many years experience behind him.  He can contacted at swimming@thedartryhealthclub.ie.

We will also have a new swimming pool timetable made and this can located by poolside and in each of the changing rooms.

Farewell and Thank you.

Unfortunately, we are saying goodbye to Eduard who has been part of our swimming team since 2016. Eduard has helped grow our swimming programme from the start and has set the standard we expect from our other trainers. He has finished here to become a PE teacher in Rush, Co. Dublin. He will be missed by staff and members alike and we wish him every success in his future endeavours.

Save the date

Our members Christmas party has been booked. It will take place on Friday 30th November in the new Iveagh Garden Hotel. We will have further details for you closer to the event. We look forward to seeing you there.

Investment and maintenance

Throughout July we continued to improve the quality of our facilities. We invested over €6k in a new air conditioning unit for the Strength Training Suite. The feedback so far has been terrific.

We also got all our equipment PAT Tested by our maintenance contractor Volt Electric. This allows us to take proactive steps to prevent costly and sometimes dangerous electrical outages which can affect our members.

We made a number of repairs to the equipment and facilities. This includes repairs to the Spin bikes, sauna, the pool and the lockers. We have also sent pieces of equipment to be reupholstered and hope to have these back early next week.

Kids swimming course

The new course for kids swimming is due to begin on September 4th. We will confirming places throughout the month of August with members getting first choice on class times until August 15th. September Class Timetable

Alex and I will be working on the September timetable over the next three weeks. We have already received quite a few suggestions over the summer and if you have any please forward them to Alex via his email: fitness@thedartryhealthclub.ie.

I hope you are all enjoying your Summer and I look forward to seeing you in the club soon.

Yours in health and fitness,

Sean Gavin

New equipment

Due to the ever increasing popularity in our group exercises classes we have purchased new equipment for them. These include heavier weights for Body Pump and Strength and Endurance. Yoga bands for Yoga, Pilates and Synergise. We have also bought new equipment for our pool based classes. Our new Aqua classes have been a huge success, so we will be adding additional classes in the September timetable. If you have any suggestions for our timetable please forward them to fitness@thedartryhealthclub.ie.

Maintenance

In June we refurbished the front entrance of the club. New chip bark has been put down and we have cut back on most of the ivy and overgrowing trees. We also power washed the cobbles and granite slabs to give it a more polished look.

We have changed a number of the men’s showers and new dispensers will be added over the next week or so. New controllers will also be installed over the next two weeks. This will give a better balance to shower temperatures during peak times.

New additions to the team

There has been a few staff changes in June. Jim is our new lifeguard. Jim who is also a part time comedian has shown great enthusiasm since taking the role. He really makes a massive difference not just during swimming classes but also for the day to day running of the pool. Lucas who has been part of the club care team for a number of years has moved to a fulltime position as a group and private swim instructor. Liam who is studying Computer Science has taking over his previous position.

On a side note, I’d like to congratulate Dave and his wife Claire, on the birth of their first child Oliver who was born on the 22nd of June.

Maintenance

The heat exchanger arrived from the UK earlier this month. We spent over €10k identifying and resolving the issue and we are delighted that it has finally arrived. I’d like to thank the members for their patience and understanding during this time. We have also had our boilers services as part of our planned maintenance schedule. Read more
